S1 Litter pick 2016

On Thursday 16th May the annual S1 litter pick took place. This year the litter pick was carried out in conjunction with the John Muir Award and was also registered as part of the national ‘Clean up Scotland’ campaign with Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Pupils and staff from Mearns Academy embarked on a huge clean-up of Laurencekirk. We kitted ourselves out in high- visibility vests from Keep Scotland Beautiful and armed ourselves with our new litter grabbers (an investment made possible by the money we raised from Rag Bag).  We also had some little helpers join us along the way in the form of children from Poppies Nursery.

We tackled the school grounds of both the new and old sites, the business park, the railway station carpark and embankment, Memorial Park, High Street, Kinnaird Park and Co-op car park.

On our return to the school we measures the weight of the litter collected. A phenomenal 183 kg was collected over the course of the day!

We hope our clean up made a difference. Many pupils expressed shock at the amount of litter in some places. The railway carpark embankment was particularly bad and some litter was even too big or heavy to carry back to the school!

We’d like ultimately for there to be no need to do litter picks at all  in the future and get the message out to everyone to JUST BIN IT!

On Thursday 21st April the Bin it! Roadshow visited Mearns Academy. This is an award winning educational show designed to tackle the impact of anti-social littering. The team performed to our S1 and S2s in a fun and interactive way whilst helping pupils to understand why it is so important to take personal responsibility for correct litter disposal. The key message is changing behaviour so hopefully as a result we’ll see less litter around the school and local area.
